Piano Keyboards
A piano is a musical instrument which is played by pressing or striking keys on a keyboard. The piano is one of the most popular instruments and is often taught to children. It is also one of the most widely used instruments across a wide range of music including classical, pop, rock and electronic music.
There are 3 main types of pianos; here is the list starting with the cheapest and running through to the best.
Digital Pianos
If you want to learn to play the piano but don’t have much space or are running on a limited budget then a digital piano is probably exactly what you need. They tend to be much smaller than upright and grand pianos, they cost much less to buy and they don’t require tuning. Some digital pianos come with a massive range of effects and other gizmos that only a digital piano could have, however these are not important if you just want to play a piano, so try not to get seduced by all the gadgets or you could end up with a costly piano full of features you don’t use.
Other than cost and space saving benefits one of the major benefits of a digital piano is that they come with a headphone connection; this means you can practice in peace.
Upright Pianos
Upright pianos are “proper” pianos unlike a digital piano. They have a great sound and look and feel like a piano. Upright pianos can take up more space and will cost more than a digital, but has a much better sound and is still cheaper and smaller than a grand piano. If you have the space and budget then upright pianos are preferred to digital ones.
If you buy an upright piano you must make sure it’s well maintained and tuned regularly to keep it sounding great.
Grand Pianos
If you have the space and the money these are the best pianos you can buy. They look, sound and play fantastic. They look that good that some people buy them as an item of furniture with little or no intention of ever learning to play, which really is testament to their beauty!
As soon as you sit down at a grand piano and strike a few keys you really can hear the difference in the sound created when compared with a digital or upright piano. You may have also heard the phrase “baby grand piano”; this refers to grand pianos that are on the smaller end of the scale, normally those which have a length of 5’3″ or less. Before you opt for a smaller grand piano to save space it’s worth noting that the bigger they are the better they sound.
Keyboards
There are two main types of keyboards, Electronic and Midi. The electronic keyboard is the cheaper of the two and can be bought from many high street shops. They have the ability to sound like other instruments (drums, flutes, etc) and the option to play backing music.
The other type of keyboard is the midi keyboard which allows you to hook the keyboard up to a device such as a computer. Most electronic keyboards are used by musical artists and used in studios when creating music.
